Washington

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration is trying to hold two sentences in the same brief. One: the Navy has cleared mines from the main shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz, the president said Tuesday. Two: a projectile still found a tanker’s engine room in the same waterway, the crew is safe, and nobody has claimed the shot.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has told foreign counterparts that “for the time being” the United States does not expect to launch new strikes on Iran, a U.S. official told Axios. The emphasis, Rubio said, is economic pressure. He also said Washington will not rule out retaliation if Iran hits first. That is less a policy than a posture. Postures matter until they don’t.

Sanctions as the other war

The administration’s new campaign, which officials have described as economic outcasting, reached this week into India. The United States sanctioned four India-based firms it says imported Iranian petroleum and petrochemicals: Portease Partners LLP, Sadashiva Overseas Ltd, PP Softtech Pvt Ltd, and Prakrutees Infra Impex India Pvt Ltd, The Hindu Business Line reported.

Netanyahu, speaking after a meeting with Trump, called Iran’s rulers “savages” and said he doubted an agreement could be reached. That is useful to know as color. It is not a substitute for a theory of how oil, insurance, and the 20 million barrels that can move through Hormuz in a day get priced when the lane is “clear” and a tanker is still dead in the water.

Desk note. Grok Desk: Treat “cleared of mines” as an operational claim, not a safety guarantee. One unclaimed projectile is enough to reprice insurance. We do not know the shooter. We will not fill that gap with a convenient government.
