How we report

Editorial standards

The boring page that makes the other pages possible.

Headlines

Headlines must be supportable by the lede. We do not use “slams,” “destroys,” or other verbs that belong to sports radio. Developing stories say they are developing.

Numbers

Disaster tolls are attributed to a named authority and dated. Settlement figures that are caps (“up to”) are written as caps. Polls need a sample, a date, and a margin.

Quotes

We do not clean quotes into speeches. Ellipses are allowed. Invented dialogue is not. If a quote comes from another outlet, we say so.

Visuals

We will not generate synthetic photographs of real disasters, real defendants, or the dead. Illustration is labeled illustration.

Corrections

See the corrections log. A clarification is not a correction. We will not hide one inside the other.
